Meelick Ambush Commemoration Committee
On Wednesday June 15th 1921 members of the 2nd Battalion East Clare
Brigade I.R.A. were ambushed by British soldiers at Woodcock Hill,
Meelick while they were attempting to raid the Limerick to Ennis mail
train.
During their retreat Captain Christopher Mc Carthy was wounded. His
comrade Lieutenant Michael Gleeson returned under fire to to rescue
Mc Carthy however both men were captured by the British soldiers and
killed.
This event subsequently known as The Meelick Ambush was the only
occasion in County Clare during the Irish War of Independence that two
republicans were killed in action fighting against the British Forces.
The courage and self sacrifice of Gleeson and Mc Carthy who took up
arms in the cause of freedom has not been commemorated in many years.
No permanent memorial has ever been erected to mark the site where
they were killed. A committee has now been formed to erect a fitting
memorial at the site of the Meelick Ambush and to mark the 90th
anniversary of the event.
The comittee is strictly non party political and includes two
historians Padraig Og O Ruairc and Tom Toomey who have both published
books about the War of Independence. The group is now selling copies
of the parchment featured in an effort to raise the funds necessary to
erect a fitting monument to mark the site of the ambush.
These parchments decorated with a beautiful celtic border and
featuring photographs of the two men killed in the ambush and a brief
outline of the events of that historic day. The parchments are a
signed limited edition of 200. A small number of the remaining
parchments are now available online for a donation of £25.00
All monies raised will go straight towards erecting a monument to mark
the site of the ambush.”
